A Legacy of Empowerment: Makiguchi and the Soka Gakkai tells the story of first Soka Gakkai President Tsunesaburo Makiguchi's humble beginnings, his conversion to Nichiren Buddhism and his death in prison. While Japan was being swept into World War II, Makiguchi fearlessly championed a philosophy that prioritized human dignity and encouraged independent thinking, especially among youth, in direct opposition to the demands of the militarist state. His philosophy of Soka—value creation—sparked a movement for personal empowerment and laid the foundation for today’s Soka Gakkai.
